Pixelated Pride

I had a hard time trying to capture the brightness of my latest piece. It measures 16″ by 16″. There are 961 pieces, all hand painted one by one! It is all made from reclaimed fence wood. This is the second installment of a series I’m doing based on the Pride Flag designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978. I’ll post the first one once I finally get around to photographing it.

Branches

I was inspired to make this as I was looking out my window and noticed how the window framed the tree outside. I didn’t see the trunk or the leaves; only the branches were visible.  I sketched the vision best I could and came up with this piece. I used reclaimed fence wood strips glued up and cut and carved out the rest. It measures 70.5 inches by 18.5 inches and 1.25 inches thick.

Soundwave

After living in my home for 5 years, I finally got tired of staring at the empty space above my TV. Since this piece was going to be placed above my television, I thought I’d make a sound wave; it seemed appropriate. Again, this was made from reclaimed fence wood. There is no stain added. Instead I used Tung Oil to bring out the natural wood finish and to provide protection. It measures 6 feet by 4 feet and is raised off the wall about 7 inches.

After I mounted it on the wall, I realized I need a bigger TV! This piece dwarfs my 55 inch television! I included a LED strip around the back to provide accent lighting. This is why there is a strip of wood going behind the TV to conceal the power cable.

It’s hard to see from the pictures, but the surface is super smooth!

Squares

Here is a piece inspired by art on the set of the show The Talking Dead on AMC. It took an enormously long time to cut and sand each square, but I really like the results! It measures 34″ square , is 4″ at its highest point and weighs 41 pounds.

Here are a couple of close ups. I like the look of the end grain.
