Cubescape measures approximately 36” by 24”. There are 600 cubes making up this landscape, each one sanded to a smooth surface. The way the grain patters and the different height cubes gives this piece several different looks, depending on the viewing angle and the direction of light.
I was inspired to make this as I was looking out my window and noticed how the window framed the tree outside. I didn’t see the trunk or the leaves; only the branches were visible. I sketched the vision best I could and came up with this piece. I used reclaimed fence wood strips glued up and cut and carved out the rest. It measures 70.5 inches by 18.5 inches and 1.25 inches thick.
Here is a shot of my sketch.
Here, I had just finished making all the rough cuts.
Here is my latest creation, Tree on Sunset. All of it made with reclaimed fence wood, including the frame! It measures 41″ wide by 20″ and is 2 1/4″ deep. I really like the contrast of the wood stain with the bright sunset colors. The tree is approximately 1/4″ thick, which gives it a little dimension.
Here you can see the thickness of the tree and the frame.
This project was inspired by a photo I took of a tree visible from my backyard. Looking at Foresters websites online and using their tree age calculators, I have estimated its age to be over 300 years old! It difficult to see in the photo, but its circumference is 212 inches! It boggles the mind to think of generations of people who have come across this tower of a tree. How many children have climbed its limbs and played in its shade? How many creatures have called this ‘home’? How many countless storms has it endured to remain standing strong to this day?
My interpretation of this tree is made of reclaimed fence wood. My neighbors replaced their fence and the contractors had it loaded in the truck and were headed to the the dump. They were nice enough to dump it in my driveway instead! The process of transforming this once pristine wood into a usable board is a dusty job! After days of sorting, sawing, planing and sanding, the end result is… the Tree of Life.
What a mess! I really need a dust collection system!
After the success of Bits and Pieces, I thought I would make a similar one, but darker. I’m happy with the way it turned out. I wasn’t planning on the color scheme turning out like a Good & Plenty, but it definitely turned out that way!
